Star Frame's Mystery Pack Dubs at Valley Springs Tournament Recap

Hello disc golf fans! Not necessarily mine but I assume you like it if you're reading :)

Saturday morning was cold and cloudy out at Valley Springs Park in Durham, NC for the Star Frame Mystery Pack Doubles competition. As competitors arrived, they checked in at tournament central to choose their 2 pack of mystery discs. Each partner got a pack so teams were allowed to share the 4 discs they got on each hole. You of course couldn't throw the same one as your partner. The set up was best disc all day with round 1 being played from the red tees and a much tougher round 2 from the all-star layout (a mix of reds, whites, and blues). The most popular team BY FAR was Star Frame Dukes composed of myself and my wife Meagan! A close 2nd in popularity was Star Frame Pros consisting of our own Drew Cheap and Bobby Recher. Let's get down to the good stuff.

Meagan and I started round 1 on hole 1. Again, this was from the red tees. We were paired up with another mixed team (guy, gal) of Mason and Erin, 2 great people. It's always nice to have a good card. Meagan and I started on FIRE round one. We took birdie on the first 4 holes of the day and by the time we finished hole 13, we were already sitting at 11 down (my goal for the round!). That said, apparently the front is a bit easier than the back because we parred a lot after that and ended up only at 14 down (3 birdies on the final 9 holes). That hot start put us 1 stroke off the lead in our division and a solid amount out in front of 3rd place. Meagan had some really solid drives and made 2 great putts that I really didn't want to attempt at that moment.

Moving on to round 2, we were of course paired with the top dogs of Jack and Becky who were two very experienced and really well rounded players. The longer tees on many holes really got the best of us as we only put up a score of 3 down for the round (vs their 8 down). Nonetheless, it was so much fun to get to play with Meagan, to use the mystery discs and slowly learn how they flew throughout the day, and to get to meet some new disc golfers. I also had my parents get out there to watch round 2 which was sweet because it was the first time they've gotten to see me play a round of disc golf. Maybe it'll be 30 degrees warmer for next time!

Meagan and I held onto 2nd place out of the 11 teams in the mixed division. Bobby and Drew took 3rd out of the 5 teams, only losing by 3 strokes. Landon took 2nd place (again) in the H2O monthly at Springwood Park. Not the result Team Star Frame was looking for but next year, we comin for em!
